It is obvious that new year celebration is common in the countries that use the Gregorian calendar with the USA, Australia, British Isles, North & South America, Scandinavia, Europe, and the Soviet Union as the main regions who welcome in a new year. It comes at the stroke of 31st December night. Wildly parties continue through the night. Different community participate and different silly dressing and activities may be seen. Noise making music, drinking champagne, dance and many other entertainments which take celebration too far. Unfortunately, besides Non-Muslim Muslims also participate widely in such controversial events and in also observed in Muslim countries.

New Year Celebration History

If we see the historical celebration of the new year around the world is so astonishing. It gradually starts from the Roman deity name as Janus. Janus is the roman concept of the God of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. For whom roman made a temple where they used to worship during the situation like war and terror. This temple remains close during the peace periods. However, they worship Janus before starting any work. They believe that praising goddess is good for welfare and successful completion of any project. People usually pray for the security of their home entrance.

Roman and Latin Concepts

Their concept was that Janus have two faces and it can see equally from back and front. Roman believes that it diety of change also. And the word ”January” is from the Janus goddess. In Latin, Janus is called as Januarius and after that become January. Janus – Januarius -January. So it’s beginning month of the year. Starting after December.

Some idolator thinks that at the end of December making noises and Hullabaloo is so good to get rid of all evil spirits. They say that the 1st of January will be free of all such evils. Further, it becomes a festival and people start enjoying the new starting without thinking bad or good aspects. So the year started on the first of January. It is exactly at the stroke of midnight at 12 am on December 31 of the current year that marks the transition to the ahead New Year. If just considering it a new year or using the Gregorian calendar there is no prohibition. But starting or finishing year in different ways controversial among different communities. Religious prolonging gives definite direction about such events. Which clarifies the concepts of Muslim and Islam in new year celebration.

Islamic Teaching About New Year Celebration

In the teaching of Islam, the new year celebration is totally Uncanonical. Muslims are prohibited to participate in such activities. It is a festival of non-muslim and driven from a banal concept. The way people around the world celebrate is totally Haram. Its involves different corrupts practices. Which are forbidden in Islam. Few common prohibitions by Islams are part of this celebration. Which are definitely Haram and obviously sin. The teaching of Islam by the Quran on the basis of Sharia and such provisions are to be scrupulously observed. So which are clearly discussed as under:

Music and Entertainment

New year night is considered as an event around the world. Besides Non-Muslims, Muslims also participate. Some entertainment practices which are totally haram acts are forbidden by Islam. Music instruments, singing girls and acts of vulgarity are not Tolerable. No doubt hereafter there is very horrible punishment for such evil-doer.

It was narrated from Abu Malik Ashari that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

People among my nation will drink vine, calling it by another name, and musical instruments will be played for them and singing girls (will sing). Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up, and will turn them into monkeys and pigs.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 4020

Obscenely

People sometimes forget the limits and sins become routine for them. Even they can,t differentiate between right and wrong. As much as they indulge in immoral action they gradually drown in the sin totally. Then he can do anything which is beyond the religious borderline. New year night celebration brings many of indecent and vulgar things which are not acceptable by Islam. There is a very horrible punishment for such people and it’s obvious in the Quran.

Indeed, those who love to see indecency spread among the believers will suffer a painful punishment in this life and the Hereafter. Allah Almighty knows and you don,t know.

Extravagance

Nearly 36% of the world population live in the worst condition. To get food two times is a great task for many people. However, poverty challenges their survival much time. So little money or food does matter a lot for them. In the new year celebration, a very vast quantity of sources is wasting carelessly. Islam strongly condemns such senseless extravagance. Allah said such people are the brother of devils as they are ungrateful of his blessings. Verse of Quran Says:

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveller, and do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.

Al Isra 26-27

Resemblance and Followings

From the historical review of this celebration in the 1st paragraph, we can easily say that it an event of non-Muslims. Such an ill concept is gradually passing generation to generations. If Muslims also do participate in these activities it is actually following of Non-Muslims. In different places, it is clarified about resemblance or following. Prophet Muhammad Saw confess to stopping such followings. Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

The Prophet (pbuh) said: He who copies any people is one of them

Dawud, Book 32, Hadith, 4020

One more narration, The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.” We said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?” He replied, “Whom else?

Sahih al-Bukhari 3456

Quran also have restriction about these followings and resemblance.

O, believers! Don,t follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows Satan’s footsteps, then ˹let them know that he surely bids all to immorality and wickedness.

Corrupt Involvements

New year festival brings huge gathering and people from many communities meet one another. As its celebration everywhere so many corrupt people get full Opportunites to commit crimes. Indecency, Wickedness, aggression are common among people in such parties. Many other illegal activities may take place openly which are totally forbidden in Islam. In the Holy Quran verses have a clear message about this:

Indeed, Allah orders justice, grace, as well as courtesy to close relatives. He forbids indecency, wickedness, and aggression. He instructs you so perhaps you will be mindful.
